The Nightmare Before Christmas has become a Halloween classic. Its dark and distinctive visual style, unforgettable music, and iconic characters capture the spirit of the season perfectly.

One of the movie’s most memorable scenes shows Sally preparing worm’s wort soup for Dr. Finkelstein. Her mysterious recipe includes fictional ingredients such as frog’s breath, worm’s wort, and a touch of deadly nightshade to make the doctor fall asleep so she can escape.

Inspired by that scene, we created a much more delicious version using lemon mousse. It makes a wonderfully spooky addition to any Halloween celebration.

This recipe will guide you through creating a smooth and refreshing dessert that resembles Sally’s famous soup.

The lemon mousse requires only lemon gelatin, heavy whipping cream, evaporated milk, and water. A skull made from white candy melts adds the perfect finishing touch.

With just a few easy-to-find ingredients and simple steps, you’ll have a sweet version of Sally’s Soup that’s perfect for a Halloween party, movie night, or anyone who loves The Nightmare Before Christmas.

  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup hot water

For the Candy Skulls

  • White candy melts
  • Wax paper or parchment paper
  • Piping bag or resealable plastic bag

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the lemon gelatin completely in one cup of hot water.
  2. Set the gelatin mixture aside and allow it to cool.
  3. Pour the heavy whipping cream and evaporated milk into a blender.
  4. Add the cooled gelatin mixture and blend until everything is fully combined.
  5. Pour the mousse mixture into individual serving dishes.
  6. Refrigerate for at least two hours, or until set.
  7. To create the candy skulls, melt the white candy melts according to the package instructions.
  8. Transfer the melted candy into a piping bag or resealable plastic bag, then cut a very small opening at the tip.
  9. Pipe skull shapes onto wax or parchment paper. For an easier outline, print a simple skull design and place it underneath the paper as a tracing guide.
